CanSkate at the BSC

At the Barrie Skating Club, we love our CanSkaters! This is a very important program, as the children are learning the fundamentals of skating technique. Whether they are headed into hockey, figure skating or just want to have the skills to skate recreationally, this program will ensure that your child is getting a great start with their skating technique. The program is delivered by our NCCP certified coaches.

Skate Canada has been redeveloping their CanSkate program over the last several years. The BSC was thrilled to be one of the clubs piloting Skate Canada's brand new CanSkate program for the past 2 years! All clubs across Canada will be implementing the program this September (2014). At the BSC we began the new program for the 2012 - 2013 season and had great feedback from parents and skaters alike. They love how dynamic and active the new program is! With 2 years of experience with this new program under our belt, we look forward to continuing to be one of the leading clubs in this new initiative for the 2014-2015 season!

Within each CanSkate session, the children will be divided into smaller groups according to their skating level. This means that any child can register in any CanSkate session, regardless of level and they will be placed in the group that will allow them to make the best progress during the session. Note that their group does not necessarily correspond to their badge (yes, it looks like the group colours might match the badge colours, but that is not the case!). In fact, there are sometimes multiple groups of children all working on the same badge level and there are also sometimes children working on different levels within the same group. As they rotate through the circuits all skaters get exposed to the same skills, so groups are made based on a variety of factors which include level, speed and age.

CanSkate sessions are offered on a variety of nights at the Allandale Recreation Centre, Holly Community Centre and East Bayfield Recreation Centre.
